AUSTRALIA utility back Kurt Gidley has been ruled out of Sunday's World Cup clash with England with a knee injury but scrum-half Johnathan Thurston is winning his fitness battle.

Thurston, who was man of the match in Sunday's opening 30-6 win over New Zealand, did not train with the squad at Olympic Park yesterday and instead underwent scans on the shoulder injury he picked up at the Sydney Football Stadium.
