THE introduction of identity cards and biometric passports was yesterday denounced as "a vast waste of taxpayers' money" after the release of a government estimate putting the cost of the scheme at more than pounds 5.6bn over the next 10 years.
Campaigners against ID cards warned that the bill could rise further, after the Home Office's Identity and Passport Service acknowledged there were "uncertainties" about the cost and a "significant probability" that its estimates would change as the project progressed.See the full content of this document
