LAIDLAW chief executive John Jeffries sat in his office of his newly-acquired Liverpool operation looking very pleased. The interview had taken place less than two days after his beloved Everton had beaten Manchester United at Goodison Park and the passionate Blue had been there with his two children to see it.

The 42-year-old has other reasons to be pleased too. He runs Laidlaw, which is the market leader in the field of architectural ironmongery.
