Summary
THOUSANDS of parents will have been celebrating their offspring's success at achieving the right A-levels to take them to their chosen seat of higher education -- oblivious (and quite rightly) -- to accusations of dumbing down. Those of us who did GCEs and cranked ourselves up in the final year at school, really should have more sympathy for the current crop of pupils who are subjected to a constant stream of exams and modules that mean noses to the grindstone for three solid years from 15 to 18 and no acknowledgment of how tough it all is. The parents, who have nursed them through the agony of it all, are braced for the cost of fees and living expenses the next few years will bring, and soon it will dawn that they'll be facing them in the dreaded empty nest.
