THE list of foods affected by the Sudan 1 scare is growing. New products are being added every day and the latest reports suggest that catering companies have unwittingly supplied goods containing the banned food dye to schools and hospitals. It has been described as the biggest scandal since BSE - I saw one headline that went so far as to classify the alert as "Armageddon" for the food industry - and now estimates say that the whole thing will cost the food industry pounds 100m.

Scandal? Possibly. Armageddon? Probably not. What it should be is a wake-up call that reminds us that we should be far more discerning about the food we eat.
