BOOKING the first week of the World Cup off work had seemed a stroke of genius when I first came up with the idea. But after a week of dull football and duller celebrity analysis, the initial excitement was a distant memory. I needed a break.

As a way of paying back my long-suffering partner Jane for sitting through the delights of Serbia versus Ghana and Honduras against Chile, I'd arranged for us to spend a night at Thornbury Castle, the only Tudor castle in England to be converted into a hotel.
