Lancashire Ease Past Cheshire to Finish Second in the League ; Golf Northwest

Summary

LANCASHIRE finished runners-up to Yorkshire in the Northern Counties League after beating fourth place Cheshire 12-6 in the final match at Pleasington.

Lancashire dominated, winning the foursomes and singles. Cheshire won just one match out of the six morning foursomes and while Tom Boys (Royal Liverpool) halved the opening singles match with Sean Towndrow (Southport & Ainsdale) at the start of the afternoon, Jack Senior (Heysham), James Robinson (S&A) and Mark Young (Longridge) increased the Lancashire lead. The remaining singles included halved matches for John Carroll (Huyton & Prescot) with Josh Sims (Mere) and Adam Andrews (Ashton-in-Makerfield). Dominic Barnes (Caldy) was among the Cheshire winners, but Lancashire won the singles also, 7- 5. ENGLAND international Nikkie Foster returned an eight-under-par total for 36 holes to win the Royal Birkdale Scratch Trophy by one shot. The 18-year-old Lancashire player was three shots off the lead after the first round when Cheshire's Emma Goddard returned a six- under-par 69. Another five players also held a one shot advantage over Foster at the halfway stage but, following a first round 72, she returned 70 in the second to triumph.
