Summary
PUPILS in selected primary schools across North Wales are to be handed free laptop computers in a trial to widen access to learning on the web. The commitment to launch a pilot project was part of the Labour-Plaid Cymru coalition deal, after first appearing as a key pledge in Plaid's election manifesto in 2007. Today, education minister Leighton Andrews will officially launch the 'One Wales' laptop pilot in Newport.
A network of local projects across Wales will provide the laptops for up to 1,200 children aged 10 to 11. These will be in selected schools in Communities First and Flying Start areas which are among the most deprived in Wales. The scheme will cost pounds 300,000 in this financial year and pounds 400,000 in 2010-11. Laptops funded through the pilot will belong to the schoolor council but children should have the chance to use them for learning at home or in venues such as public libraries.See the full content of this document
