THE voice of the speaking clock is female. I was bowled over by this fact when I read it yesterday - on the 75th anniversary of TIM as it's affectionately known - and just had to dial the numbers 1-2- 3 to confirm it. Sure enough, the voice of a woman announcing the special birthday message with a warm yet formal delivery: "Welcome to the BT Speaking clock which is precisely 75 years old today. At the third stroke, the time from BT will be 1.11 and 40 seconds.

Further investigation reveals the vocals belong to Sara Mendes da Costa, who won a BT competition to find a new voice. Almost 18,500 people applied.
