THE Bank of England said yesterday its emergency lending facility had been called upon for the first time in more than a month.

The Bank lent pounds 314m on Monday through its standing facility, which allows other banks to borrow unlimited amounts of money overnight at a penalty interest rate of 100 basis points over the base rate - currently 5.75%.
