Lending Slump Hitting Firms

LENDING to businesses slumped 1.2% in the 12 months to June - the first time that the rate has declined in more than a decade. According to Bank of England data, lending to firms such as loans and overdrafts dropped pounds 1bn between May and June, or 0.2%.

Howard Archer, of IHS Global Insight, said: "This suggests that banks are still reticent in their lending to companies."
