DAVID BARTLETT'S article (Daily Post, February 10) "Museums can safeguard heritage" had me wondering exactly what is meant by such heritage. At a time when so much of our national heritage, traditions and culture are being filtered, re-written or arbitrarily redefined, how much of this "modern" concept of culture is representative of Liverpool's history?
The new Slavery Museum is praised as reflecting cultural traditions of an established black community, as is the Irish famine memorial but Liverpool's culture embraces much wider links. Phil Redmond is quoted as saying that criticism that the International Slavery Museum did not properly highlight Liverpool's contribution to the abolition movement "bordered on silly".See the full content of this document
