I FEEL compelled to respond to some of the points made by Naomi Kingston (Letters, January 25), regarding Palestine and Israel, as facts need to be placed within their political and historical context.

In 1947, the culmination of a ruthless terrorist campaign waged by Zionist gangs against the British, lead Britain to place the question of Palestine before the United Nations. The subsequent UN Partition Plan did indeed offer a two-state solution as Ms Kingston observes. However, 56% of the land was offered to the Jewish people (mainly comprising earlier settlers and refugees from Nazi occupied Europe) who made up one third of the population and only 44% of the land to the Palestinian people who made up two thirds. The Zionist leadership agreed in the sure knowledge that the Palestinians were bound to oppose their own dispossession.
