RE: ROBERT STORRIE'S letter of April 11. Here again, the mention of the American Civil War on Merseyside and the only item people can recollect is the Alabama affair. This was only a very small item in the four years of the war, by far the most important happening was the financing of the war and the monies raised were held in a depositor at 10, Rumford Place, in Liverpool.

General Colin J McRae was appointed by the Confederate government as Treasury Bursar and sent to Liverpool to manage the funds raised in Europe via the Erlangar Loan and the proceeds placed in the Liverpool depository. All items required for the Confederate States were purchased on McRae's authority, including the CSS Alabama, which was only 0.67% out of pounds 7m of all expenditure from the Liverpool depository.
