RE: North East referendum on regional assemblies Nobody will be surprised at the outcome, least of all the Deputy Prime Minister. We in the North West have been saying all summer that without devolving real power, devolution is a non starter. This Government never meant to devolve real power, and what centralist MPs would vote to give it up. Turkeys wouldn't vote for Christmas.
But real devolution is worth fighting for. A regional assembly would see to it that a third Mersey crossing is built quickly, that the North West optimises the benefits of EEC membership, and regional leadership would be more closely accountable to us.See the full content of this document
