JIM Henderson's comments about the reintroduction of National Service need challenging. I did my stint 1959-1961. The bullying and childish discipline was beyond belief. Of course there were good times, but nearly every impressed man I met couldn't wait to get out. The Army was rife with snobbery.

A perfect example was the seating notice at a sports ground: Officers and their Ladies; NCOs and their wives; Other ranks and their women.
