Summary

IT was with intense relief that I left the planning committee meeting at Llangefni Town Hall on March 8, at which the councillors voted to refuse a planning application to build a biogas plant between the villages of Bryngwran and Gwalchmai. Appreciation must go to all those councillors who spoke against this proposal, with especial thanks to those who gave up their time and energy, not to mention their voting rights to speak so eloquently outlining the dangers of allowing this development to proceed.

Whilst acknowledging the growing need to develop strategies for dealing with all kinds of waste, this particular scheme focuses on possibly the worst of all, including animal waste products as well as blood and entrails. There is no doubt that this particular method of anaerobic digestion is considered superior to landfill, where the methane gas produced escapes into the atmosphere and contributes to global warming. It must be tempting for a local authority, when presented with an opportunity by a developer who owns land on which he is prepared to house such an enterprise, to grab it with both hands. However, serious consideration needs to be given to the most appropriate location for allowing this to become an established industrial site.
