Summary
I WRITE in relation to the article about the consultation on the proposed closure of Watergate Special School (Daily Post, March 1) to clarify a number of issues, including those around the accelerating move towards greater inclusion of special educational needs pupils in mainstream schools in line with national government policy and Ofsted's recommendation: The school has places for 140 pupils. In September, the projected roll is a maximum of 38 and possibly as few as 32. That latter figure equates to 77% surplus places.
The school is currently on two sites because when we consulted in 2003, the clear message we got from parents was that a single site - our preferred option - was not acceptable. Making that change in accordance with parental concerns is one of the factors which precipitated the current situation.See the full content of this document
