Summary
LIVERPOOL has long been a world-class heritage city, and Unesco's recognition of this will undoubtedly bring more tourist spending into the city, a neat process by which buildings from the past become currency for the future.
As for 'middle-class sentimentality' over the demolition of terraced housing, let's be realistic here. The 'workers' cottages', as defined by Joseph Paxton in his Architectural Guide to Liverpool, are inhabited by all kinds of people, lots of them workers, and for many of them it is a valid choice of home. Having lived in eight terraced houses over the past 20 years, I have found them to be great accommodation, easily beating post-war homes in terms of their energy efficiency and solidity.See the full content of this document
