THE latin name for the lilac genus is Syringa (often crops up in crosswords!) and the most common species in cultivation is Syringa vulgaris and its varieties. Typically it grows into a large shrub or small tree reaching 10 to 12ft in 10 years and is grown for its beautiful panicles of tightly packed wonderful sweet scented flowers.

The flowers are so highly prized that ingenious Dutch flower growers go to amazing lengths to force them into bloom outside of the normal season.
