IN the dead of night, a gathering of intrepid Benedictine nuns took to the roof of their supposedly haunted abbey intent on banishing such unfounded rumours. All dressed in white, they took to the highest point of Talacre Abbey, in Flintshire, hoping to astound and ultimately stifle those who, back in the mid 1980s, continued to perpetuate myths of ghostly goings on.

"We were very naughty and frivolous, I know, but it was great fun," says Sister Paula, who was the abbess at the convent from 1984. "Unfortunately, I don't think anyone saw us but it was still worth making the point as talk of the abbey being haunted seemed to recur constantly."
