WHILE I was at university, I gained a 2:1 in Modern History, and a first in my unofficial curriculum of drinking and romantic calamity. And while I'm sure the last two will never go out of fashion, it seems the former is on its way to extinction.

New figures showed that more than 150 schools failed to enter a single child for a history GCSE last year, with some papers picking on poor old Knowsley for entering only a handful of pupils for history A-Level.
