Summary
The RCN is constantly striving to improve working conditions for our members, along with promoting patient health and safety, and raising concerns about key health issues.
In May 2011 there will be an Assembly Election in Wales to decide the next Welsh Assembly Government. The RCN has surveyed its 23,000 members in Wales to identify and develop policy areas that not only need addressing but can be addressed with the policy, legislative and funding options open to an incoming Government. Read our Manifesto on our website. We are also asking all political candidates in the elections to sign up to the following pledge: I pledge that I will campaign to protect patient care by ensuring that the Welsh Assembly Government: Maintains the number of whole-time- equivalent registered nurses working in the NHS in Wales to protect the quality of care patients receive and their health outcomes Implements the Community Nursing Strategy for Wales to ensure the public have access to quality healthcare outside of the hospital environment Develops sexual health services across Wales paying particular attention to their accessibility for young and old, men and women Increases the percentage of NHS nurses who have received their annual mandatory training to at least the UK average to ensure that nurses are supported to deliver safe and dignified care Ensures the regulation of Health Care Support Workers through the Nursing and Midwifery Council to protect the public and ensure consistency of education and training Places a statutory duty on LHBs to demonstrate (both to their own Board and publicly) that they are managing a nursing workforce that provides the right number of registered nurses and Health Care Support Workers (HCSWs) to ensure appropriate staffing levels for patient care.See the full content of this document
