IF GOOD communication is the secret of winning Olympic medals then rowers Cath Bishop and Katherine Grainger have a distinct advantage as they chase gold for Britain in a women's pair's boat which is likely to be brimming with emotion.

Not only does Bishop have a degree in modern languages and a Ph D in German literature, she is also studying Serbo-Croat in preparation for taking up a full-time post with the Foreign Office in Sarajevo after the Olympics. Even in a week culminating with a tense first heat at the Olympic rowing centre at Schinias today she has found time to take a lesson by telephone.
