CONSUMER confidence picked up for the third consecutive month in March but remains well below levels seen in the first half of 2006, figures indicate.

Nationwide said its consumer confidence index rose by three points during the month. But optimism is still low when compared to last year, with the impact of interest rates contributing to a downbeat assessment.
