FLIGHTS were cancelled at John Lennon Airport yesterday as clouds of volcanic ash forced airports across Europe to close.

Airports in Portugal, Spain and Italy were closed and there were 500 fewer flights than normal, according to Eurocontrol, which is responsible for air safety across the Continent.
