FOR more years than I care to think about I have been a fan of Woman's Hour on Radio 4. It was celebating 60 years this week and I caught a trailer for an item from the 1950s by a Mrs Trent, who said in a peculiar accent that pronounced the word girl as 'Gel' that she wanted to talk about Washing Day.

To have a day devoted to washing is an odd concept now but it was always Monday in our house. I remember well the palaver of it all.
