BLUE chip companies were nursing another day of losses last night as a debate raged in the US over a proposed 700 billion dollar (pounds 383bn) banking bailout.

The FTSE 100 Index fell 1.9%, or more than 100 points, following a 1.4%, 75 point drop seen on Monday as trading conditions remained jittery.
