NORTH Korea's normally secretive government said yesterday that a devastating train explosion had killed hundreds of people -and invited foreign aid workers to visit the disaster scene.

In a departure from its usual intense isolationist policy, officials of the communist state told diplomats and aid groups that several thousand people were injured and thousands of homes destroyed or damaged by Thursday's blast at a railway station near the Chinese border.
