WOOLWORTHS' pounds 29m take-over of book wholesaler Bertram yesterday look-ed set for the all-clear after the competition watchdog provisionally backed the deal.

The Competition Commission said it did not expect Woolworths to enjoy a monopoly in the market as a result of the tie-up, despite an earlier warning from the Office of Fair Trading that the takeover could stifle competition.
