Readers will have noticed how many of our young people carry water bottles around with them wherever they go. I had a young lad sitting next to me in the Cathedral the other day who uncorked a bottle during the sermon and took a little sip. This new habit is to be commended. Doctors say we should drink at least two litres a day.

But I began to notice that these young persons don't actually drink the water they carry - they sip it. At the rate they sip it would take them a week to consume two litres. I discovered that the sipping is a ritual.
