THE World Cup and state-of-the art betting machines should make 2006 a strong year, said William Hill yesterday as the bookmaker announced its profits for 2005 were likely to be beyond expectations.

The City had earlier indicated that the group, which is neck-and- neck with Ladbrokes as the UK's biggest bookie after buying 624 betting shops from Liverpool-based Stanley Leisure last May, would make pre-tax profits of between pounds 230m and pounds 240m before exceptional items.
