THE kids' uniform squeal of delight echoes the engine's mournful whistle as the 14.22 from Carrog trundles into the station with a triumphant hiss of steam. The half-hour trip into Llangollen on the full-gauge heritage railway has been a nostalgia-tinged journey through some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable.
It reminds me in many ways of some of ruritarian eastern Europe's less frequented back ways, although at one stage I'd fully expected to encounter Basil Rathbone chasing a heinous monochrome villain along its swaying corridors.See the full content of this document
