HAVING encouraged readers a few weeks ago through this column to try to make their voice heard if they really cared about their Merseyside heritage, I was heartened to hear from David Swift, of Litherland. David returned to his Merseyside home after years of exile in Rochdale, with a mixture of excitement and despair that must reflect the feelings of many people who care about Liverpool.

"I was thrilled when we got the Unesco award of World Heritage Site status. What an accolade for any city to achieve," says David, 56, now retired from his job as an industrial chemist.
