THE soaring cost of weddings these days means that around 100,000 engaged couples will never make it down the aisle, opting to stay engaged permanently instead. Around 20 years ago, couples spent on average pounds 4,300 on their weddings but this has now more than quadrupled to pounds 18,500.

Research suggests that wild demands fuelled by the weddings of the rich and famous may have helped to inflate this figure.
