Summary
"AT LEAST I'm not as bad as him/her." How often have we comforted ourselves with these words? In the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9), the Pharisee thanks God that he's not as bad as some people, while the tax collector humbly says, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner". (Pharisees strictly observed Jewish tradition by fasting and giving alms, and maybe had good reason to believe themselves better than average. On the other hand, tax collectors were hated because they worked for the Romans and they ran something rather like a protection racket).
Jesus said the tax collector, not the Pharisee, would get closer to God, because he who exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted.See the full content of this document
