HISTORICALLY Denbigh was the county town and perhaps could have been again had the county council HQ been moved to the closed hospital as some hoped.
Denbigh is a walled town overlooked by the ruins of its castle, one of several built by Edward I. The town was originally based on the hilltop around the castle but was largely destroyed during the Wars of the Roses. Near the castle is the bizarre remains of Leicester's Church - begun in 1579 by the Earl of Leicester. It was to become a cathedral and the title of city transferred from St Asaph to Denbigh - but money ran out.See the full content of this document
