TONY BLAIR will today be asked to back a dramatic rescue bid for the Merseytram project It emerged last night that the ambitious project to link Kirkby with the Mersey waterfront could go ahead even if Transport Secretary Alistair Darling refuses to budge on the pounds 170m he has offered.

It is hoped that Mr Blair and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott will agree to work with Merseyside's MPs to secure funding from other regeneration budgets that will keep the scheme alive.
