A CUT in Government grants for Merseyside universities of around pounds 12m - even before fees go up - was described as a "Christmas kick in the teeth" yesterday.

Vice-chancellors were ordered to impose a pay freeze and share services with other universities to achieve 6% "efficiency gains" from next April.
