THE University of Liverpool's plans to raise tuition fees to the maximum amount came under fire last night amid claims they would make it almost impossible for Merseyside's poorest young people to study there.

Council leader Joe Anderson said the move could make the university the preserve of elite or foreign students. Mass protests accompanied Wednesday's meeting of the university's Senate, which approved plans to seek the maximum pounds 9,000 a year from 2012, with students occupying some buildings. The university, part of the elite Russell Group, would join Oxford and Cambridge in charging some of the highest prices for higher education in the country.
