PRIVATELY sponsored academy schools, such as Liverpool's St Francis of Assissi, threaten to increase social segregation, a think- tank warned yesterday.

Academies - set up by Tony Blair, backed by Gordon Brown and now championed by the Tories - were intended to transform education in some of England's poorest postcodes. But the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) think-tank urged both Labour and the Conservatives not to extend the number of academies being built.
