HOBBIES may prove to be of great worth as enjoyable pursuits, but in financial terms most are costly. But one pastime in Wales which could once more be open to all can offer very real financial rewards - panning for gold.

Gold has been harvested from our rocks and rivers since before the Romans turned their hands to mining our mineral wealth, and Welsh gold has always been prized for its purity. Famously, it was Welsh gold that was used to make the wedding rings of royals Charles and Diana and Edward and Sophie, and a brooch to mark the 100th birthday of the Queen Mother.
