THE first Europeans to cross the Atlantic may have brought back the ingredients for cigarettes and chips but they took with them something far more damaging to health - disease.

These were simple, harmless diseases in their homelands, but virulent killers in the Americas, where the population had no developed antibodies to fight off the infections. The result was catastrophic, yet advantageous to the colonisers.
