CHARLES Clarke was detailing to his fellow MP's how he would detain "suspected terrorists" without trial if the security forces had their suspicions but no proof. Supporting him on his immediate right was the Leader of the house and part time secretary of state for Wales Peter Hain.

What wonderful irony. If the powers had been in place in the 60s would Hain have been allowed into the country when as an idealistic campaigner he disrupted the Springboks rug by tour? Would he have been detained in his house indefinitely? Was the journey up the greasy pole really worth it to be part of an increasingly right wing Labour government?
