Just what gives a patient or visitor in a hospital casualty unit the idea that they can rant and rave at NHS staff, verbally abuse them, or even strike out at the nurses? Drink or drug-fuelled passions are no excuse for violence, even if someone is feeling afraid or vulnerable because of what has happened to them or a friend.

Healthcare staff are, literally, in the frontline in accident and emergency during the weekend night shift, as a paramedic responding to a 999 call, or even a district nurse working alone in the community.
